So, after deciding that the Florida Room wasn't going to work for my particular situation, I had to look over the plans at Jamaica Cottages to see which one would be the best choice for the site. I still wanted something within the same size range, but we needed to be able to customize the window arrangement to have more climate control.
I seriously considered the Writers Haven. I love its lines and feel it has a lot of character. It also has a front porch which is something that I really wanted.
I probably would have customized it and gotten it without the clear roofing, if that was possible since we do live in such a sunny place. We actually need more shade here! I'm thinking they would have that automatically as an option for the four-season anyway.
The reason I decided against this kit was because of the short-sided walls. The main purpose of the building is to be my home office. I need to be able to have the option to hang upper cabinets and have additional storage capability. The short walls just would not allow that kind of opportunity. Still a great design for the right purpose!
Here's a photo of someone's Writers Haven cabin shown on the site; isn't it gorgeous?
So Brad and I went back to the site and looked at more plans. We narrowed our search down to the general size we wanted with the features most important to us, and WAH-LA, the Home Office looked to be the perfect fit!
Initially, we overlooked it due to its rather simple appearance. Upon realizing how much we could customize it, we could see how ideal it really was!
It has a lovely front porch, and the front door can be moved to one side, allowing a larger slider window to be placed on the other side. I'm going to do as another customer did and put a comfy bench under the window. In fact, it will be similar to the photo below, but with a single slider window.
As for windows, we will be putting a single casement window on the sunny wall and on the back wall, and three casement windows towards that amazing view I showed you in the last post.
To blend with our adobe home, the Home Office will be painted the same Glidden Woodruff tan and the roof will be Autumn Red metal roofing. I would love to leave the natural wood exposed, but it will be easier to care for, and it will fit our site better.
I love the choice we've made. In the next post, I'll talk about the start of the building process!
